As someone who lives above the Arctic Circle, I thought I knew cold. Gorak Shep at 5,164m in November at 4am is a different category of cold entirely. Worth it. Indescribably worth it. The sunrise from Kala Patthar with Everest above us — orange and gold and impossible — was the most beautiful thing I have witnessed in 41 years of life in some of the world's most beautiful landscapes.

Everything exceeded my expectations. The Sherpa culture alone is worth the journey — the prayer flags, the mani walls, the monasteries, the warmth of local people in every village. Our guide Kami was thoughtful and incredibly patient. The views of Ama Dablam from Tengboche made me stop walking and just stare. Kala Patthar at sunrise made me completely forget I was exhausted and freezing.

The Tengboche Monastery evening puja — monks chanting, incense burning, Ama Dablam glowing outside the window — was something I will never forget. Then Kala Patthar at dawn. The trek is physically demanding, the tea houses are basic above 4,000m, and the altitude is very real — but none of that matters when you're at Kala Patthar watching the most spectacular sunrise on the planet. Guide was exceptional, health monitoring was thorough, every detail handled perfectly. A customer for life.

I'm a marathon runner and assumed the trek would feel easy. It didn't — altitude humbles everyone regardless of fitness. Our guide Pemba was firm when he needed to be (made me slow down on Day 3 when I wanted to race — he was completely right). Kala Patthar at dawn was my Everest moment. My 14-year-old son and I did this together. He is now the coolest kid in his school and I am arguably the coolest father in Germany. I turned 25 on Day 7 at Dingboche. Guide Kami somehow organized a birthday cake at 4,410m — where he sourced it I'll never know — and the entire tea house of trekkers from eight countries sang for me. That memory alone justifies the entire trip. The trek itself was extraordinary — the Hillary Bridge, Tengboche, the Khumbu Glacier, Kala Patthar sunrise. Five stars is genuinely not enough.

By Day 9 at Base Camp, our group of strangers had become something else entirely. I flew home from Kathmandu with eight new friends from six countries. This trek creates community unlike anything else I've ever experienced. That, as much as the mountains, is the magic.

I'm a PE teacher and I still found this trek genuinely challenging. Anyone who says it's easy is not being honest. But challenging and rewarding are the same thing at 5,555m. The guide team was professional and warm, the itinerary was thoughtfully paced, and the tea house garlic soup became a nightly ritual for our whole group. Kala Patthar sunrise is something I will spend the rest of my life trying to describe.
