I'm a marathon runner and assumed the trek would feel easy. It didn't — altitude humbles everyone regardless of fitness. Our guide Pemba was firm when he needed to be (made me slow down on Day 3 when I wanted to race — he was completely right). Kala Patthar at dawn was my Everest moment. The most peaceful, overwhelming, beautiful thing. I was completely present for every second. Perfect.

By Day 9 at Base Camp, our group of strangers had become something else entirely. I flew home from Kathmandu with eight new friends from six countries. I'm a PE teacher and I still found this trek genuinely challenging. Anyone who says it's easy is not being honest. But challenging and rewarding are the same thing at 5,555m. The guide team was professional and warm, the itinerary was thoughtfully paced, and the tea house garlic soup became a nightly ritual for our whole group. Kala Patthar sunrise is something I will spend the rest of my life trying to describe.

This was a birthday gift from my husband and it was perfect in every way. Guide Lakpa was wonderful with our mixed group. The tea house food was much better than expected — dal bhat, garlic soup, apple pies in Namche. What I wasn't ready for was how culturally moving the whole experience would be. The Tengboche Monastery, the memorial at Thukla, the prayer flags at Base Camp. A deeply beautiful journey.

The cultural depth of the Khumbu region surpasses anything I've experienced on a trekking trail. The mountains are on a different scale.
