I turned 25 on Day 7 at Dingboche. Guide Kami somehow organized a birthday cake at 4,410m — where he sourced it I'll never know — and the entire tea house of trekkers from eight countries sang for me. That memory alone justifies the entire trip. The trek itself was extraordinary — the Hillary Bridge, Tengboche, the Khumbu Glacier, Kala Patthar sunrise. Five stars is genuinely not enough.

I turned 40 on Day 9 — at Everest Base Camp. My guide produced a chocolate cake from absolutely nowhere and the other trekkers sang happy birthday. I cried for about 10 minutes straight.
