I chose this trek specifically to experience Buddhist mountain culture, not just mountain scenery. The Khumbu delivered both in extraordinary measure. Tengboche Monastery at sunset — monks chanting evening puja, butter lamps flickering, Ama Dablam glowing outside — was a genuinely spiritual experience for me. And then Kala Patthar at dawn. The guide's knowledge of high-altitude medicine was genuinely impressive — he explained the physiology of acclimatization to us every evening in simple terms. I turned 40 on Day 9 — at Everest Base Camp. My guide produced a chocolate cake from absolutely nowhere and the other trekkers sang happy birthday. I cried for about 10 minutes straight. Best birthday of my life, no question. The trek was beautifully organized, perfectly paced, and the mountain views were more spectacular than any photograph I'd ever seen.

As someone who lives above the Arctic Circle, I thought I knew cold. Gorak Shep at 5,164m in November at 4am is a different category of cold entirely. Worth it. Indescribably worth it. The sunrise from Kala Patthar with Everest above us — orange and gold and impossible — was the most beautiful thing I have witnessed in 41 years of life in some of the world's most beautiful landscapes.
