The guide's knowledge of high-altitude medicine was genuinely impressive — he explained the physiology of acclimatization to us every evening in simple terms. Daily pulse oximeter readings became a ritual everyone looked forward to. The scientific understanding of what my body was doing at each altitude stage turned anxiety into fascination. Nobody ever mentions the food enough in these reviews. The dal bhat in the tea houses is genuinely delicious and the unlimited refills policy is one of the best things that exists at any altitude. The apple pies in Namche bakeries should be internationally famous. The garlic soup at Lobuche saved my soul on a cold evening when everything felt hard. And the farewell dinner in Kathmandu on Day 13 was perfect.

I've trekked in the Caucasus and the Altai. The EBC route has a density of extraordinary experiences per kilometer I've never encountered elsewhere. The Hillary Bridge, Tengboche, the Thukla memorials, the Khumbu Glacier, Kala Patthar — each one would be the highlight of most other treks. Here they come one after another.
