Trek in Kathmandu

Did this as a birthday present to myself turning 30. I've backpacked all over the world but the EBC trek is genuinely different — the scale of the mountains is beyond anything I've experienced. The Khumbu Glacier, the suspension bridges, Tengboche at sunset, Kala Patthar at dawn — every day had a moment that made me stop and think "this is why I travel." Guide Pemba was top class.

Retired last year at 60 and put EBC at the top of my list. The guide's conservative pacing strategy is everything at high altitude — by Day 9 when nearby groups were struggling, I still had reserves. I'm a yoga teacher and thought my breathing would help at altitude. It did — a little — but nothing fully prepares you for 5,000 meters. What made the difference was the guide's experience and the itinerary's pacing. The two acclimatization days are non-negotiable and I'm glad the schedule enforced them. Everything was excellent. The guide explained what was happening to our bodies at each altitude stage — I found it fascinating and reassuring. Pulse oximeter checks every morning and evening gave enormous peace of mind. Day 9 at Everest Base Camp standing on the Khumbu Glacier was beyond description. And then Kala Patthar the following dawn. Two defining moments in one trip.

Everything about this trek was perfect. What surprised me most was how much I loved the tea house experience — sitting in the dining room by the fire with trekkers from ten different countries every evening, sharing the day's stories over dal bhat and ginger tea. The community of the trail was something I didn't expect and didn't want to leave. Kala Patthar sunrise was the highlight of my 38 years.

I've climbed Table Mountain hundreds of times. Kala Patthar makes Table Mountain look like a speed bump. The organization before the trek was faultless. On the trail, guide Nima could identify every peak visible from every viewpoint, explain the geology of the glaciers, and share Sherpa folklore by the fire every evening. The Khumbu region is more beautiful than any photograph suggests. Everest from Kala Patthar at sunrise is the most beautiful thing I will ever see in my life. 5 stars without hesitation.

My group of 4 friends did this together and it was the best decision we've ever made collectively. This was a birthday gift from my husband and it was perfect in every way. Guide Lakpa was wonderful with our mixed group. The tea house food was much better than expected — dal bhat, garlic soup, apple pies in Namche. What I wasn't ready for was how culturally moving the whole experience would be. The Tengboche Monastery, the memorial at Thukla, the prayer flags at Base Camp. A deeply beautiful journey.

The trek is physically demanding, the tea houses are basic above 4,000m, and the altitude is very real — but none of that matters when you're at Kala Patthar watching the most spectacular sunrise on the planet. Guide was exceptional, health monitoring was thorough, every detail handled perfectly. A customer for life.

I've done many Himalayan treks in India but the Khumbu region is something else entirely. Better infrastructure, more dramatic views, extraordinary Sherpa cultural richness. The photos online don't do it justice. The mountains look big in photos — in person they are incomprehensibly enormous. You feel genuinely small among them but in the best possible way. Day 5 to Tengboche with Ama Dablam right there — I literally gasped. Guide Tenzing was patient and knowledgeable, the tea house owners warm and welcoming. Then Kala Patthar at 4am in every layer I owned. Perfect.

I'm a nurse and I paid close attention to the altitude management — it was textbook perfect. Daily SpO₂ monitoring, mandatory acclimatization days, no rushing, constant hydration reminders. The guide carried supplemental Diamox and basic altitude medications. From a health and safety perspective, Inticketo is genuinely professional.
